Vacuum Degassing Systems and Chambers

When thinking of the Vacuum Industry, most people will automatically think industrial or scientific applications. Rarely does the creative and artsy world come into the equation. The truth is that Vacuum is so diverse; it manages to play an important role with artist and craftsmen. This is where Vacuum Degassing Systems and Vacuum Chambers come into play.

Materials such as Casting Plaster, silicone rubber and Investment Plaster can be problematic when trying to work with them and air bubbles can occur when mixed with required additives and will cause defects such as nodules, cavities and hallows to the final finish. This can make make it look untidy and unprofessional and not what the craftsmen had in mind.  Defects can also occur under the surface, which over time could make a major impact causing the mould to break or crack.

The solutions – Vacuum Degassing System:  This process consists of mixing materials ready to be placed in a vacuum chamber. The container, which will be placed in chamber must be big enough for the the liquid to expand. It is important that the mixture has the characteristics of a liquid, so it flows and can be poured. It must not set. Mixing can be done by hand or electric mixer, which is when the unwanted bubbles can arise.

When the mixture is placed in the chamber, the material is degassed – the air is evacuated and the air bubbles will rise to the surface. Here they will burst and the air is pumped away with a Vacuum Pump. The material will then be poured into a mould and placed in the chamber to repeat the process. The mould is then left to set. These simple and effective procedures save craftsmen money and time allowing them to create their moulds with ease.

Did you know that West Technology has been supplying and advising on Vacuum Degassing Chambers and Pumps for over 10yrs? It is one of our first systems which were sold. The above process is at its most simplistic, West Technology has designed and manufactured similar, more complex systems to meet customers criteria. If you would like to discuss an application, please get in contact for a free consultation and quote.
